5 Things: birthdays, mugs, sunsets, lotions and Olympic Gold!

The 5 things that brought me joy this week:

My brand new mug! I got it at Indigo, and I’m very excited about it! It’s keeping the other mug that I have that says “I read past my bedtime,” company.

It is one of my best friend’s birthday today! Shan is 29 today. And the exciting thing is that her birthday falls on our girl’s weekend trip to Niagara! It’s gonna be good!

It has been incredibly hot over the last couple of weeks here in Toronto, and for me it’s so hot that it makes me not want to do anything. The evenings, however, especially by the lake, cool down considerably, and that’s when I start feeling awake and energized. This picture is from one night this week walking by the lake with Doug. Also how gorgeous of a view to have in your backyard essentially, am I  right?

This is my new favourite body lotion. It’s actually the lotion that they use at The Westin in Ottawa, and I loved it so much I bought a couple of bottles at the gift shop. It’s so light and smooth and yet so hydrating (especially in this crazy heat that Toronto is currently having). Definitely one of my new favourite things!

Penny Oleksiak has now won 4 medals for Canada at the Rio Games. 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze. Also, she’s only 16. What a champ!

As ever my 5 Things is inspired by Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere. Make sure you check it out!

Sunday Cooking: French Toast

Breakfast foods are some of my favourite. Currently, I’m on a French toast kick – it tastes delicious and is easy peasy to make.

The recipe I use calls for:

1/4 cup of milk (I use almond milk)

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 a teaspoon cinnamon

2 slices of bread

You mix all of the above in a dish, and take your first piece of bread and dip on side and then the other in the mixture. Put it on the frying pan and do the same with the second piece of bread.

Fry the bread until it’s toasted on both sides and the bread isn’t gooey in the middle. You want to make sure that all of the mixture is cook. This takes in total no more than 5 minutes-ish.

After that you plate it and serve. I usually also chop up a banana to go along with it (yay fruit! Though at this particular moment I wasn’t feeling that banana). I also use real maple syrup because it’s amazing, and if you’ve never tried it you really should.

And for those of you who are curious as to what I was watching when I sat down to breakfast – It’s Complicated, with Meryl Streep. I am so envious of her kitchen in this movie. Plus, it’s a very fun movie in general.

Song Wednesday: Renegades by X Ambassadors

This song is on some car commercial, and I heard it one day and couldn’t get it out of my head. So I went looking for the song, and now that I’ve listened to the whole thing, I still can’t get it out of my head. I’m actually listening to it as I type this and bopping along.

Happy Hump Day! Hopefully, you’re also now bopping along to it. 🙂

Song Wednesday: Honey I’m Good by Andy Grammar

I heard this song on American Idol for the first time during the finale show, (I know, I am WAY behind the times), and I totally love it. I keep bopping along to it, and singing it in my car.

My favourite part of the song is:

“I gotta be like oh, baby, no, baby, you got me all wrong, baby
My baby’s already got all of my love”

Because the tempo of the song changes, and I think it gives the song some more depth.

I thought it would be a perfect song for getting through Wednesday. Happy listening!

Girls Day Out

Yesterday, was a girls day out with a couple of my best friends. We’d been planning this for a month or so, and were incredibly excited that the weather turned out so beautifully. Our destination was Niagara-on-the-Lake (apparently a lot of people’s destinations yesterday), and the new outlet mall that is quite close by.

We are not fantastic early morning risers when we don’t have to get up for work, however we were on the road by about 9:15 (after stopping for some Tim Hortons. You can’t start a road trip, no matter how small or how big, without some Tim Hortons. It’s just unCanadian if you do.) and on our way to shopping heaven.

Between the four of us ladies purchases were made at Kate Spade (I may have gotten my very first Kate Spade purse…it’s so beautiful), a kitchen store, Nike, some jewelry stories, the list goes on. After the outlet mall we made our way to our favourite winery Pillitteri. We had gone to Pilitteri for the first time last month for one of the girl’s birthday parties. We did a wine tour and tasting, which was a lot of fun. However, we were fresh out of the wine that we bought that time, so we had to go back.

We had a couple of bottles of wine each, when this elderly lady appeared behind the counter and motioned us over. She told us that if we bought a case of win – which was 12 bottles – they give us one of the 12 for free. We were completely on board with that. The elderly lady then talked to us too about the Gewurztraminer Riesling and how it was made, and all of a sudden we had more than 12 bottles. So we decided to make it 24. Two cases of wine. Turns out that the elderly lady is Mrs. Pillitteri herself. Her and her husband started the winery and it’s now in its third generation of Pillitteris’ working and owning the winery.

Post winery, we did lunch at Niagara-on-the-Lake, then we did some shopping. It was a completely beautiful day out, and it was just nice to walk and hang out in the sunshine.

Hanging out with my girls, and enjoying the sunshine, was a perfect way to spend yesterday – as well at completely necessary. I relax with my girls. We’ve known each other for too long to have any filters with each other, and so it just ended up being a perfect day and just what I needed.
