This week’s 5 Things is going to amalgamate this week and last week because I completely forgot about this blog post last week. So here are 5 Things that have brought me joy over the past 2 weeks!
After almost 8 months, I finally have a job! I’m working in marketing and communications at the Canadian Institute of Heating and Plumbing.
Two weeks ago I saw a movie at TIFF called We Can’t Make the Same Mistake Twice, which was all about First Nations children and the appalling system and conditions that they live in. It was heart wrenching and infuriating to realize what is exactly happening on these reserves. It’s definitely a movie that you should see.
Two weeks ago I was at a games night and I played Telestrations After Dark for the first time. It was hilarious and is now a game that I want to own. I’m putting it on my Christmas list.
I’ve started knitting a baby blanket for a friend of mine’s new baby. The baby (a little boy) is beyond adorable. The knitting though is not going well. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to rip everything out and start again. I keep messing up the pattern. I’m determined to get it however. And I’m enjoying the actual knitting (when I get it right).
This past Sunday I went to Church for the first time in a long time, and I had a really good time. The sermon was excellent and the vibe of the Church overall is what I’ve been looking for. This past week was a “blessing of the animals,” which I had never seen before. People brought in their dogs and cats to be blessed. I think the cutest was a family with two little girls who had two cats called “Sugar” and “Spice.” Makes me smile just typing it.
As always my 5 Things is inspired by Cupcakes and Cashmere. Be sure to check them out!
Nature is playing a rather large role in my 5 Things that brought me joy this week. I’m assuming it’s because it’s now September and fall is on the way (though it certainly hasn’t felt like it yet).
This week Doug and I took a couple of walks down by the lake. It’s been gorgeous weather in the evenings and I find that the walking and the company help me to relax.
The sunset was so beautiful the other night with the pinks, and the sound of the waves. It’s a perfect recipe to help me pause and unwind.
I made Doug and I a picnic lunch one day this week. Nothing too fancy just some sandwiches, water and a fruit salad for desert. Doug here apparently has it in for the bananas.
This is probably an eccentricity of mine, but oh my goodness I LOVE freshly laundered sheets. It feels so cozy and clean hopping into bed on the day that you wash your sheets. This definitely brought me some joy this week.
The two books that I’m reading next. Truthfully, I’m a little on the fence about Modern Lovers, but I’m going to give it a go and see. I’m excited for The Happiness Project because I really enjoy the podcast. My friend Meiling got me onto it.
As always my 5 Things is inspired by Cupcakes and Cashmere, which you should definitely check out!
The 5 things that brought me joy this week:
Last weekend I went up to Doug’s parents’ place with Doug, and two of his best friends. The views from the area are gorgeous and it’s so peaceful there.
While at Doug’s parents’ place we went to the gun range. I have never shot a gun before, but this was my target. I’m thinking if the zombie apocalypse ever happens, I’ll be okay.
I’m currently reading Hamilton: The Revolution (about the musical). It’s really interesting, fun, and a beautiful book. Also, I love the soundtrack.
I received a flyer in the mail today from the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) about a couple of exhibits that they’re having later on this year, and I’m super excited. There’s the Small Wonders one, which is what the above picture is about. And there’s also a showing of Monet and Van Gogh. Super stoked.
I’m involved with Postcrossing, but Postcrossing also lets you make direct swaps with people, which is awesome because now I have a pen pal in the US. I’ve never had a pen pal before, so I’m really looking forward to this.
As always, my 5 Thing is inspired by Cupcakes and Cashmere, which is a great blog and something that you should check out if you haven’t already.
The 5 Things this week that brought me joy:
My cousin Mike got married on Saturday. It was a beautiful and gorgeous wedding, and they had a photo booth at the reception! Naturally, Doug and I had to go through it at least once.
This is a picture of one side of the bread table at the wedding. I LOVE bread and I may or may not have swooned when I saw this. Definitely one of my favourite things about the reception. Though of course the food overall was amazing.
I finally jumped back into watching Scandal this week. I had previously seen season 1 and a couple episodes of season 2 last year, but I stopped because it got to be a little bit much and repetitive for me (holy crap with the back and forth between her and the guy’s name who I’m not going to mention here because of spoilers). However, I needed a show to watch and I love US political shows – there’s just so much drama – (The West Wing is most definitely in my top 5 shows) so I decided to give this one another go.
My book club is currently reading The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. I’m only about 40 pages in so far, but one of the things that I really like about it is how short the chapters are. It makes it feel like you’re progressing quickly through the story and to me it comes across as very organized, which I feel a detective/whodunit novel should be. The main thing with this book is that I don’t read it at night. I’m a huge chicken with an overactive imagination. This is a book that I will read in the daytime in the sunlight only.
I’m leaving in a couple of hours for a weekend away at Doug’s parents’ place. It’s going to be a lot of fun. The hardest thing about packing for me is deciding what book to bring. I finally decided on my Kobo (because I have a bunch of unread books on there, as well as some all time favs) and Love Style Life by Garance Dore. The Agatha Christie book is staying at home since I can’t read it at night, and I feel like that’s when I’m going to be doing my reading this weekend.
I hope that you all had things that brought you joy this week! As always, my 5 Things is inspired by Cupcakes and Cashmere.
I recognize that this post is late – it should have gone up yesterday – but I’m not gonna lie. I totally forgot that it wasn’t scheduled already, so here we are on a beautiful and hot Saturday morning (I’m actually heading to my cousin’s wedding in a couple of hours) and there’s just enough time to squeak this in.
Thus, without any further ado here are my 5 Things from this week that brought me joy. As always this post is inspired by Emily’s 5 Things from Cupcakes and Cashmere.
Last weekend was a Girls Weekend. We went to Niagara-on-the-Lake, and stayed at White Oaks. The day was starting off at 6:00 am for pick up because we were going to be going to the Scottish Festival in Fergus. Diana Gabaldon, author of Outlander, was going to be signing books. I was set to drive. Unfortunately, my anxiety the night before was over the top, and I didn’t end up sleeping. I had also worked myself into such a state that when the time came to leave, I just couldn’t do it. But, with some lightning quick changes the other three were able to go and meet Diana. My brother ended up giving me a serious pep talk later on the in the morning, and I was able to meet them at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Girl Weekend was a go for me 🙂
I was not there to get my copy of Outlander signed, but unbeknownst to me Shannon bought a copy for me there, and Sabrina got in line and got it signed for me. Natalie got in line and got some copies for Shannon signed (there was a limit of three). My girls are awesome. Also if you haven’t read Outlander – jump on it.
The night before Girls Weekend, Shannon, Doug and I went to the Scottish Festival in Fergus to see the opening tattoo and ceremony. I also did some shopping a got this great (and amazingly soft) t-shirt that on the front says “Lift here” and on the back says “Official Kilt Inspector.” My Nana when she saw that said it was “very cheeky.”
One of my favourite shows in BBC’s The Musketeers. It is such an awesome show, and I am incredibly upset and sad that it got cancelled after only 3 seasons. I got tired of waiting for season 3 to come to Netflix (but the first 2 seasons are there!) so I bought it and watched it in 2 days. So worth it.
I’m currently reading The Assistants by Camille Perri, and I’m really enjoying it. It is silly and completely hilarious. I also got it out of the library (I had it on hold for a while) which I’m very proud about because I’m working on spending less money and using the library more often.
The 5 things that brought me joy this week:
My brand new mug! I got it at Indigo, and I’m very excited about it! It’s keeping the other mug that I have that says “I read past my bedtime,” company.
It is one of my best friend’s birthday today! Shan is 29 today. And the exciting thing is that her birthday falls on our girl’s weekend trip to Niagara! It’s gonna be good!
It has been incredibly hot over the last couple of weeks here in Toronto, and for me it’s so hot that it makes me not want to do anything. The evenings, however, especially by the lake, cool down considerably, and that’s when I start feeling awake and energized. This picture is from one night this week walking by the lake with Doug. Also how gorgeous of a view to have in your backyard essentially, am I right?
This is my new favourite body lotion. It’s actually the lotion that they use at The Westin in Ottawa, and I loved it so much I bought a couple of bottles at the gift shop. It’s so light and smooth and yet so hydrating (especially in this crazy heat that Toronto is currently having). Definitely one of my new favourite things!
Penny Oleksiak has now won 4 medals for Canada at the Rio Games. 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze. Also, she’s only 16. What a champ!
As ever my 5 Things is inspired by Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere. Make sure you check it out!
My 5 Things this week, is as ever, inspired by Emily and Cupcakes and Cashmere.
Last weekend I hung out with my friends Carmen and Sarah, and we went to the east end of Toronto to have lunch, do a little shopping and to take a nice walk. This picture is from our walk in Glen Stewart park. It’s completely gorgeous and very peaceful.
Last weekend I also went and saw Matilda the musical with my mom at the Ed Mirvish theatre. It was very cute, and I loved the story that Matilda told about the escape artist and the acrobat. The girl can definitely tell a tale. It also makes me want to read Matilda.
The best boyfriend in the world (aka Doug) order me the new Harry Potter for my birthday back in March. He picked it up for me while I was at Matilda and dropped it off at my place, along with a chocolate glazed donut (my favourite), with a note on the bag that said, “because power reading needs a little energy xoxoxoxo.” How awesome is he?! Also, my review of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is coming on Tuesday!
I know that some people find adult colouring ridiculous, however, I find that it really helps me when my anxiety kicks in. This is one that I’ve been working on for a night or two, and I do it while I watch tv. I find that it gives my brain something else to concentrate on (because sometimes tv isn’t enough to keep my attention) and it also gives my hands something to do. It’s incredibly relaxing.
My two books that I’m currently reading! I’ve just started both of them, and I’m excited for them. They should be really good!
